From San Diego, pick up the Pacific Coast Highway in San Juan Capistrano and continue on to a tour of the famously haunted Queen Mary in Long Beach. Get back on the PCH and wind north through L.A.’s beach towns. Stop in Venice for fresh fish tacos on the boardwalk. From Venice, the road takes a bend at Santa Monica, and you’ll pass through Malibu. Make a pit stop in Malibu Lagoon State Beach for a dip in the ocean and early afternoon surf. Dust the sand off, get back in the car, and set your sight toward Santa Barbara. Spend the day here. Leaf through a paperback on the beach. Enjoy the Spanish Colonial history of the city. Wander through the Botanic Gardens or explore the heavenly Devil's Canyon. Head north for a stunning drive along winding cliffs, ruminating on West Coast (manifest) destiny and infinity. Your final destination is Big Sur. Spend the night at Post Ranch Inn. Partake in an early morning meditation at Esalen, then soak in the hot springs perched on the Pacific horizon. 2014 |
