TRAVEL: BEST COASTAL ROAD TRIPS IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA : OREGON

Enter Traverse City, the gateway to the “cherry capital of the world.” Driving through, you’ll find cherry orchards bearing the plump, red fruit by midsummer (National Cherry Festival in July). Continue to the Old Mission Peninsula, where wineries are nurtured by the lake-effect weather patterns. Peninsula Cellars has a tasting room in a 19th century schoolhouse. Head to the fishing village of Fishtown in Leland. Lake lovers will enjoy Charlevoix, a town that sits between Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix, home to boaters and fishermen. Take a side trip to the 19th century Horton Bay General Store, which Hemingway visited during his childhood summers at Walloon Lake. Sit on the porch with a cold pop from their old-fashioned soda fountain.
