What are your favorite destinations from ‘Maui My Way’ and why? I’m smitten with the North Coast of Maui, Paia in particular. It’s a historic plantation town transformed into a bohemian, surfer and kite boarder enclave. The vibe reminds me of another Pai, a hippie mecca for expats and Hill Tribes in the mountains above Chang Mai, Thailand. Paia is a groovy (groan word, but sometimes perfectly right on) oasis in the jungle. Lots of vintage shops and used bookstores and tattoo parlors in old rooming houses with handmade signs in brightly peeling paint amongst delicious fresh food spots and bikini boutiques and art galleries. Psychedelic sunsets and laid-back locals. Ultimately, if I could, I would move to Lana’i for a year. It’s mystical and beyond beautiful. Pine tree forests, red-earthed god gardens, shipwreck beaches and bathwater coves. Silent. Peaceful. Open. Really off the grid and yet everything I need (iPhone…safety…a clean bed…the ocean…access to culture…kind people) available. I’m sort of in love with Lana’i. July 2012 |
