DENIM DAMES

What could be more all American than a pair of classic blue jeans? The uniform of John Wayne is more than a few ‘30s cowboy flicks and a nation of factory workers in the ‘40s. A sign of youthful, 1950s rebellion in the form of James Dean. The flared pant of choice of the ‘60s hippie and Jackie O. in the ‘70s. Denim has signaled in what it means to be young, American and mass since its inception.

Today, denim is once again on the brain as designers from Lam to Lagerfeld weave it into their collections for 2013. To celebrate these reimaginings, we’ve picked our favorite looks and paired them with classic images of iconic denim wearers – a twenty-something Lauren Hutton, Patti Smith, Marilyn Monroe, and a host of women who redefined what it meant to be young, independent and more often than not, all-American (manifest destiny renegade pioneer women...), in jeans.

Our first denim dame is Charlotte Rampling. In the 1960’s, Woody Allen’s “ideal woman” was all icy stares and light wash mini-shifts. We envision her millennial counterpart as equally detached, at home on the urban range with Blood Meridian in one hand andtouchtf79g04tzxIPLNJJQRIKJNOKKNKimage-6240078-10451141 of melancholia.
