We’re told we’re fated to become our mothers. For some, it’s a vision swathed in resistance. For the likes of a lucky few (or maybe more women than would care to admit), though, this seemingly inevitable act of maternal reflection—or taken more liberally, lineal inspiration—is far from fearful. It’s a stylistic, adventure-steeped gift. And with women like Jane Birkin, Mariel Hemingway, Isabella Rossellini and so many other spirited creatives as mothers, how could the prediction be anything but generous and very rich indeed? These women were—and continue to be—trailblazers in undaunted living. Vagabonds in film, art, and fashion. Nomads moving through the world with subtle defiance, inimitable vitality. Women many aspire to run in line with. With one look at their daughters—the singular likes of Dree Hemingway and Langley Fox, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon, etc.—there’s not a lot of doubt that the prediction is accurate, as well. In honor of Mother’s Day, we’re taking a trip through some of our favorite mother-daughter groupings. Women like Peggy Lipton, who captured and challenged in The Mod Squad, and her irreverent, sharply prolific daughter Rashida Jones; the ever-whimsical Silvia Fendi and her daughter Delifina Delletrez, who is carrying on an undeniably daunting family legacy and catching swift attention with her own wit-held designs. They’re inspiring duos—sometimes groups. Braving the way through style and creation. And pushing us forward along the way. Through multigenerational provocation—Jane Birkin and her progeny—and travel both literal (in the case of Birkin, taking one daughter to Istanbul, voyaging with Serge Gainsbourg to the Tsuiji market in Tokyo, filming in and falling in love with Somoa) and figurative (the art, the work they inspired and created). We have a lot to look to. CLICK HERE TO FOLLOW ALONG —and maybe call upon a few mother-given adventures of your own. Editor: Ashley Simpson 2014 |
