TRAVEL: ZANZIBAR TO DO: NOMAD DESTINATION GUIDE by Electra Gillies
  SPIRIT:

LUX:
Take a walk around of the Mosques and Churches of Stone Town. The Kizimikazi Mosque, built in the 12th Century, is believed to be the oldest building on the island. An Anglican Cathedral built by freed slaves contains an alter- the site of a ‘whipping tree’. Light a candle in memoriam.

LOCAL:
Spend a day on Pemba Island visiting ‘Spiritual Healers’, known to heal energy through traditional offerings and incantations.

TRAVEL ADVICE:
“My advice when planning any trip, whether to Zanzibar, or anywhere else, is to not have a set itinerary. Learn a few words in Kiswahili to communicate with island locals. One of the biggest joys is getting lost- discovering a restaurant or meeting an artisan in the narrow corridor of stone streets. From the town center to the deserted beaches of the island, Zanzibar is a nomad’s paradise.” ~Electra Gillies
