  CULTURE/ARTS:
Edinburgh is beautiful, historical, and if you are planning to be in Scotland in August the Edinburgh Fringe is an enormous performance and theatre festival. It’s also a huge European destination for Hogmanay (New Years Eve).
However, if you really want to get a feel for the pulse of the arts scene now, go to Glasgow. It’s more industrial, and certainly rougher and tougher than it’s gentrified neighbor of Edinburgh, but it’s also younger and more avant-garde. And of course don’t miss the Glasgow School of Art. Designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, it’s a bit like going to school inside of a piece of art.

LUX:
House for an Art Lover
Also designed by Mackintosh. Just outside of Glasgow proper.

LOCAL:
The Garage
Get in on the music scene and hang out with loads of people with funny haircuts.
