LUX:
We stumbled on a place by accident but it was exactly the kind of spot we were looking for. Not too fussy for the boys but perfect for the grownups. This restaurant had a Brooklyn vibe: Second-hand furniture and our table had the most awesome God Jul (Merry Christmas) vintage tablecloth of cheery trolls. I had the fish stew and the boys ate Norwegian meatballs. My husband sampled local pale ales and I drank New Zealand wine. Alcohol isn’t sold two days before New Years Eve. If you fancy a bottle of wine or two, stock up in advance.

LOCAL:
I have a terrible habit of buying chocolate at the supermarket checkout or wherever I am. In Norway I really got into Troika bars. They were so delicious. I purchased Troika wherever I could. (I rationalized this by saying, next week I’ll be back in New York and won’t be able to buy a Troika bar, for like, ever.) It’s a marzipan cake layer with raspberry jello covered in chocolate.
