With the discovery of gold in Collingwood in the 1850s, Coal Bay was renamed Golden Bay. Located at the northwest tip of New Zealand, the region is a treasure-trove of freshwater springs, ocean views, and cave systems. Take a tour of the Ngarua Caves, including caverns of hanging honey-hued stone castles and an array of underground finds, like moa bones, or take a scenic flight of the bay at sunrise, and watch the sun coat the shore. Fasten amber glass pendant lanterns to a ceiling to create a home grotto.
