The Hana Highway, a road starting in Kahului and weaving east around almost 600 curves before reaching Hana, runs along the salty indigo equatorial waters of Maui, Hawaii. Drive slowly as you wind around the tiny single lane road – you’ll have the ocean on one side, steep mountains covered in koa and hibiscus on the other, and not much room in between. Stop at a roadside stand for homemade banana bread and liliko’i; dine local style at Braddah Hutts with wild boar bbq and two scoops rice later that day. If you were ever a fan of Jurassic Park growing up, be sure to pull over at the Garden of Eden and Botanical Arboretum to see where the move was filmed. Fourteen miles east is Waianapanapa State Park, where you can hike past a sea cave emitting pink-tinted water, caused by thousands of tiny shrimp. 2014 |
