“I was proud of my balancing act—able to swim across the pool at The Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs, while clutching my fig-vodka; the glass jutting out of the water like a periscope, rocks clinking in the cup, cool drops numbing my fingertips, guiding the way toward my friends gathered in the shallow end.
Success, I thought, reaching them, the bright, hot sun dipping over the mountain, the lingering bergamot on my wet lips, my drink dripping down the side, but so what. Everyone was drenched in the magic hour. Life was amazing. It was a buzz. We were free.
I licked the side of my cocktail, the sweetness of the syrup and salt water combined, and twirled around to rest my mid-back on the pool’s edge to take in the scene: Seu Jorge piped in by the speakers surrounding us, whispering in the distance, the warm desert air enveloping me, Pendleton patterns, big skies and this bohemian oasis- re-imagined for now.
Independence, escape, inspiration—all invited to the party. Only a little slippery, sticky…wild. The vastness, possibilities and present tense were consuming us, splashing over the sides of everything.
Effortless, I thought, taking a sip.
Everything was easier here.
Even me.
Especially me.”
