The Manacare Foundation, founded in 1994 by Joy Butler Markham, helps Sri Lankan children who were affected by the tsunami. They also provide education, medical facilities, housing and employment for over 800 people. The Manacare Foundation has a stall at the monthly Galle Fort flea market. Children’s Hope is another local non-profit that works to help children affected by the tsunami. They rebuilt the children’s ward of Galle’s hospital that was destroyed by the disaster, are constructing a new premature baby unit, and also work to help boys by affected by trafficking, among other projects. Embark, launched in 2007, works to reduce animal cruelty in Sri Lanka. The group places particular focus on stray dogs, working to give them homes and treat their injuries.
