Galle Fort is a World Heritage site. Amazingly beautiful. If you’ve been to Hoi An in Vietnam, Galle Fort has the same feeling. It takes just one day to see everything – the city’s beautiful architecture, little boutiques with antiques, spas (Bodi Day Spa- no link, not on the internet yet), Galle Fort… Stay: Galle Fort, Fort Printers and Amangalla are beautiful, full-service hotels. Like staying in an elegant, chic museum. If you’re in Sri Lanka for business or a honeymoon, these are ideal places to indulge your most luxurious self. Shop: At the Mimimango boutique. You’ll find stylish caftans and dresses - Calypso meets Matta meets DVF. It’s tres chic, but not really authentic Sri Lankan style. A flea market in the lot surrounding the fort opened the first Sunday of January 2013. Close to two dozen booths manned by expats from Europe sell local beauty products, crafts, dresses, and fusion cuisine. About Galle Fort: You don’t feel a sense of loneliness or alone in Sri Lanka – but if you go to Galle Fort, you’ll feel a bit…alone. Everything is hushed. You’re secluded. Walk along the moss-covered embankments, built in the 16th century, and wander through the suriya-shaded stone streets. You’re in a bit of a cocoon, infused with Sri Lankan elements – local mango fruits in Bellinis, traditional dress for men (a button-down shirt and a sarong). It’s very nice for a day or two. It’s also very isolated. About Galle: The city of Galle outside the walls of the Fort is bustling with Sri Lankan markets, vendors, and general city madness. This is where the train and bus stations, schools and businesses are located. April 2013 |
