Name: Nicole Gulotta Occupation: Founder of Nomadic Thread Society; Purveyor of eclectic global textiles Hometown: NYC Live: Between NYC and Brighton, UK Projects: Eco-Luxe hand knit slipper-socks and baby hats, made in the Peruvian Andes by a women’s knitting collective supported by a recent UN grant and the NGO Awamaki. Hand-selected, vintage Peruvian blankets and rugs at Erica Tanov. A collaboration with textile artist Liz Jaff on a quilt for a Smithsonian exhibit in April 2013. We’re also partnering with Tantalus shop owner Edwina Pooley to create a line of vintage grain sack cushions, picnic and beach throws from vintage linen and cotton ticking, as well as aprons from vintage market textiles. I'll be heading back to Peru in April to source more Vintage Mantas. They were very well received when I brought back the first dozen last Spring, so I'm going to look for more! I'll also work with an NGO and artisan group I've established a relationship with in the Sacred Valley to develop a small collection of hand spun knits. Afterwards, I'll head to Bogota to reconnect with a lovely weaver who works on several different hand looms to make the simplest and most elegant woven cotton shawls and scarves. I was invited to visit Guatemala in September to be introduced to local artisans and their rich weaving heritage, a most exciting prospect. It looks like a very South American year ahead!
