With its cost-conscious, “off the beaten path” guides infused with gritty authenticity and heavy doses of political, environmental and cultural awareness, Lonely Planet was considered the guide among younger travelers in the 80s and 90s. Facing stiff competition from upstarts such as Moon, Rough Guides, Insight Guides, and the like in recent years, the publisher responded by dusting itself off and marketing titles to a chicer, more affluent set — wanderers who grew up, in other words, who still crave adventure, only this time they’ll be wearing designer sunscreen and silk sarongs.
