What’s the best souvenir you’ve ever picked up on a trip? I don't remember his name, but it was great while it lasted! When I go to Delhi, I love to visit the State Emporiums. There you can find beautiful fabrics and crafts from different regions of India. It was in one of the Southern State Emporiums that I found beautiful cotton Dupattas. These were hand-woven cottons with sari borders on each side. I bought a beautiful pink, green and a yellow one. I still have them 28 years later and wear them as sarongs on all my vacations. It is very hard to find the same quality of woven cotton today – they are very rare – so I cherish them. Some beautiful paintings I found in the market in Port au Prince, Haiti when I was there in 1984. They are local paintings done on wood— regional craft style with beautiful rich colors. The memory of a trip to Marrakech- I was looking at carpets in the market and they were closing for lunch, but then the men working there invited me to sit around their tagine meal and eat with them. I did not buy a carpet, but I have a wonderful memory of dipping bread and eating with these guys. May 2013 |
