“Polka dots are a way to infinity” ~Yayoi Kusama

Louis Vuitton debuts a collaborative collection with Yayoi Kusama today. Yayoi Kusama. Louis Vuitton.

Trippy.
Literally.

Yayoi Kusama is most widely recognized for painting dots. On canvas. On tree trunks. On ceilings. On naked bodies. After almost a century of vagabondish multi-media declarations, she lives in Japan in a hospital for the mentally ill. In asylum the artist continues to create her singular motifs of mania.

Repetition.
Obsession.
Precision.

Louis Vuitton is most widely recognized for monogrammed canvas.  On shoes. On luggage. On umbrellas. On Angelina Jolie. After over a century of L.Vuitton’s logo-centric voyages, Marc Jacobs designs a carefully curated series of franco-pop-ish styles. The narratives in their trunks. Contemporary references. Counterfeit ironies. Insular mobility.

From the Pompidou center in Paris to the Tate Modern in London, a major Kusama exhibition has been making the rounds. Yves Carcelle, LV’s president says the ‘values’ Yayoi Kusama and Louis Vuitton share are “travel through cultures and time.” Yeah. Ok.

Vuitton’s advertising tagline is “Where will life take you?". To the Kusama Retrospective at the Whitney Museum in New York City, opening on July 12. In Yayoi Kusama for Louis Vuitton silk pajamas.
