Midnight sun begins on May 18 and lasts through July 26th in the picturesque town of Tromso, known as “the capital city of the Arctic.” Summer activities include watching for sperm whales off the continental shelf, glacier hiking in the Lyngen Alps, or playing a round of midnight golf at the city’s golf course.

The sun doesn’t rise from the end of November to the middle of January, which makes for aurora spotting easy. Shutterbugs should sign up for Kjetil Skogli’s “Chasing the Northern Lights” tour—Skogli, a photographer for the BBC, offers guests instruction on how to best capture the aurora on film. During the last week of January, Tromso hosts the Northern Lights Festival featuring some of the country’s best classical and jazz musicians.
