Take advantage of the 24-hours of light from May to July with a midnight sailing trip out of the harbor town of Ilulissat where the icebergs, some as tall as a 15-story building, glisten blue and turquoise in the sun. Stay at the Hotel Artic, which hosts a rooftop barbeque most evenings in the summer. And, while the resort does offer standard rooms year round, during the warm months guests can opt to stay in modern cliff-side igloos (made from aluminum, not ice) with private decks offering a stunning view of Disko Bay. The aurora borealis is at its most spectacular from August to November and mid-February to April, and with clear skies and little in the way of city lights, visitors are practically guaranteed a light sightseeing. Travel out of the country by dogsled for a clear shot of the night sky. July 2013 |
