Dennis Oppenheim was one of the originals. His ice and snow-carved piece on the Canadian border—Annual Rings (1968)—helped define what it meant to make Land Art. Gallery Transplant (1969)—a snow carved outline of a gallery—followed and gave way to large scale wheat-grown pieces and later, dramatic and sometimes self-harming body art.
