I have known Julie Tolentino, an artist and activist, for two decades.
In January 2012, Julie and partner, Stosh Fila, travelled to the Philippines on an Art Matters fellowship. Their month-long research and development grant focused on encounters and exchanges with queer Filipino artists in Manila, Quezon City, Tagaytay, Taal, Cavite, Segada, Baguio, Buscalan, Tinglayan and Siquijor. On their journey, they sought out the illustrious 91-year-old Whang Od, the eldest female keeper and practitioner of the rare traditional Batok tattooing in Northern Luzon.” -Stephanie Tamez Stephanie Tamez is an artist from San Antonio, Texas who lives and works in New York City.
