The Fourth of July is here, and whether patriotic or not, we have to admit there’s something compelling about all the red, white and blue. The combination is bold and primal, and it’s everywhere to be seen. A reminder of a certain vision of Independence, a romantic notion of free beginnings, rebellious beginnings, and a myth of our culture…or maybe something grander. A way to express a devotion to a certain kind of life, with no need for words or otherwise overt assertion. We’re wearing bright colors, setting off fireworks, and pouring ourselves a glass of crisp wine in the sticky July heat. As we contemplate space, opportunities afforded for great adventure, and Westward wanderings past and future. Open air and summertime escapes. Barbecues on balmy afternoons and fireflies in the dark. Watermelons, pick-up games, grassy fields and voyages, of the physical or interior variety, that take us far, far away from familiar past times and into another state of freedom entirely.
