ART: MIKE KELLEY AT MOMA PS1 : BEST OF NYC ART EXHIBITIONS 2013 by ALEXANDRA THOM
ART: GRAVITY AND GRACE BY EL ANATSUI AT THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM: BEST OF NYC ART EXHIBITIONS 2013 by ALEXANDRA THOM
The award for the most astounding, overwhelming exhibition of the year goes to Mike Kelley’s retrospective at MoMA PS1, on view through February 2014. Filling 40,000 feet of gallery space, the exhibition belies the tremendous range of Kelly’s oeuvre, produced during a thirty-year career that was cut short last year by his suicide at 57. Working in sculpture, video, painting, printmaking, installation and sound art, Kelly navigated rough conceptual terrain, tackling themes including memory, dark humor, pop culture, and rebellion to produce work that is beautiful, creepy, hilarious, prosaic, intellectual and, ultimately, deeply provocative.
