In terms of sheer, dazzling visual beauty, this year’s highlight would have to be Gravity and Grace: Monumental Works by El Anatsui at the Brooklyn Museum. The first solo exhibition in a New York museum by the globally renowned contemporary artist, the exhibition featured over 30 works that transformed appropriated objects into site-specific sculptures. Born in Ghana and living in Nsukka, Nigeria, Anatsui creates shimmering tapestries out of found materials that reference both African aesthetic traditions and the global history of abstraction.
